The world has been talking about the merits of weight, and how it is better for the safety of vehicles. Many heavier, bigger vehicles hit the streets with improved features. But Mazda has put in a different strategy. As far as the new Mazda2 is concerned, lightweights are in.

Mazda2 supermini has shed a 100kgs as compared to its predecessors. The 1.3L and 1.5L models now weigh 955kg and 960kg respectively. 60% of the weight savings came from engineering solutions. Feature adjustments and reduction of the car’s exterior dimensions provided the remaining weight loss. The interior dimensions of the previous car have been retained in the new model as well.
Use of high and ultra-high tensile steel not only made the car lighter, but also safer. The vehicle is 40mm less in length and 55mm less in height as compared to its predecessor. The front seats, the front speakers and the electronic system; have all lost weight. Reduction in the wiring harness also contributed to the reduction in weight.
Mazda is targeting the younger generation with this new model. The supermini comes with boxy styling and sportier looks and a sleek new design. While the body and chassis are new, the drivetrain comes from the previous model with only minor alterations. Only the five-door model will be available initially. Pricing is likely to be nearly $16500.
The new Mazda scores well when it comes to fuel consumption, nearly 53mpg. Many other automakers might look at the new Mazda and redesign their models to achieve a better fuel usage. Mazda2 has gone off the trend of producing heavier vehicles and perhaps started a trend for weightloss.
