Furai literally means the sound of the wind in Japanese and with the Mazda Furai, designers have aimed to create just that, the countours and shape the open wind will take. This very futuristic looking race bred concept is curves and more curves. This extreme moving scuplture of a super car has some sublime design elements which give it a futuristic radicality that will be very difficult to match by other cars.
The Mazda Furai, which wowed visitors at the Detroit International auto show earlier this year has been designed by Mazda and the much acclaimed Franz von Holzahausen and his team in Swift Designs at Irvine, California.
The Rotary engined, three rotor powered Furai concept has a swoopy front which looks more like a machine from starwars than road going cars. The first thing that strikes you is the Furai’s pointed hood which is offset by huge side overhangs that house the humongous front wheels of this cutting edge sports car giving it a mean DONT-MESS-WITH-ME look upfront. The cab forward stance of the mid engined Mazda has swoops all over its body and looks very racy even while standing still.
Huge vents under the doors upto the rear wheel wells look like large air intakes. The Cab tapers down as we move to the rear and then you are hit with a huge rear spoiler that make it look like Le-Mans racing Audis. What more, this supercar even tries to do its bit for the environment by running on 100% ethanol.
That apart, this hot machine is one mean, very focussed super car. The Mazda Furai makes the super car even more super.
