Toyota has stated that they are on track to become the World’s largest automaker in 2007. The throne currently belongs to General Motors.

Toyota’s dominance will gain some more significance when the Congress reconvenes in January. Sen. Barbara Boxer also commented that the key to rule in the United States is making more fuel efficient cars and Toyota does the same so there is no surprise for Toyota’s growth.

Toyota currently has two top selling cars in the U.S. in two different segments. They are Camry, which is the top selling car in the U.S. market and the Prius, the best selling hybrid in United States. Taking this move for supremacy another step forward the company has opened a new plant in San Antonio that will be manufacturing Tundra pickup truck. This move can be seen as to target the last segment of the market that is dominated by U.S. Manufacturers.

The U.S. automakers are going through a dark phase which already has seen the closings of many plants in the country causing many workers to loose their jobs.

The Japanese auto giant is currently employing 39,000 workers at six plants in North America including four in U.S. On the other hand GM had 141,000 workers in 2005 which is a major depletion as in 1962 it was employing more than 464,000 workers.

Toyota has commented that the company will produce more than 9.4 Million vehicles worldwide in 2007 that is 4% more than what they produced in 2006. GM has made no such notification on what number of vehicles will the company produce in 2007.

Some analysts also stated that GM has already targeted big markets of India, Russia and Thailand so the throne can very easily be shifted from one company to other in the coming years.
