According to reports in Japan’s Nikkei paper, Toyota will continue to sell the existing Prius in Japan, even after the launch of the third generation Prius. The idea, probably is to keep tab on the Honda Insight, by selling a stripped down, low cost version of the Prius to compete with Honda’s new vehicle.

The third generation Prius unveiled at Detroit Auto Show has the latest in technology, and increases displacement to 1.8-l. These changes also increase the price of the vehicle, taking its cost to the range of $25,900-$37,217. While Toyota has not responded to the reports, fighting off the Insight may not be that easy.
