Toyota, together with Unisys and Tops Systems is developing a mighty 800 teraflop real-time ray tracing (RTRT) system. To be used in automobile design, the system uses nine, 73-core chips banded together into a single system that can fit into a device similar in size to a desktop computer. The system uses nine identical 45nm ASICs (Application-specific integrated circuit) and a 64-bit RISC master controller. Using this system, designers will be able to accurately see how the design and paint configurations on an automobile will appear in real life, or how the surface will appear under varied lighting conditions. This will make the designer’s job easier, and companies will be able to save money on prototypes. Follow the links below for more technically detailed analysis of the chip.
