UAW seems dead serious about reaching an agreement with Chrysler as soon as possible, it has given the company a deadline till 11 a.m. Wednesday, failing which UAW may go on a strike.
UAW believes a framework is already in place, pointing to its deal with GM. The deal may be modified to be Chrysler specific and UAW may not want to walk out of Chrysler’s plants considering that the company has recently idled six plants as part of production Cutback.
Contracts between UAW and the Detroit Big 3 were set to expire on September 14, but UAW gave Chrysler and Ford more time while it grilled GM for a contract. UAW is keen to move through the deal as fast as possible and Ford is up next to be on the negotiation table.
