A New York non-profit organization, Environmental Defense painted a gruesome picture of pollution caused by U.S autos. The findings of Environmental Defense, reported at The Los Angeles Times read that although comprising only 30 percent of the world’s nearly 700 million cars U.S autos emit maximum pollution. Reason being, Americans use fuel with more carbon, drives more, that too using less fuel-efficient cars.
According to Environmental Defense findings, U.S. cars and light trucks were driven 2.6 trillion miles during 2004, equal to a round trip to Pluto 470 times.
The report also attributes pollution to old small cars, which it finds emits more carbon dioxide than SUVs — 25 percent of the total (small cars) and 21 percent (SUV).

Perhaps with newer innovations and new technologies, air pollution could be lessened. And maybe with newer cars like DaimlerChrysler’s Smart cars, there probably would be lesser emissions and happier car owners.
