Rising gas prices is causing President Bush lots of worry. His administration’s recent bill to increase auto mileage by 33 mpg failed. But, The House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee approved 28-25 the Transportation Department suggestion to rewrite 30-year-old Corporate Average Fuel Economy.
Though, the legislation proposed no mpg target, yet, it requires a final regulation by 2008. It would cover all foreign and domestic passenger cars: compacts, sedans and wagons, which account for about 25 percent of domestic oil consumption.
This step is however received with mixed reaction; some members were uncomfortable fearing that it might hurt manufacturers.
