Volkswagen has revealed its plans for India and they show that the company is considering a huge lineup for this emerging market. Cars ranging from the super luxurious Phaeton to a small car will all make up Volkswagen’s lineup in India. Small cars are likely to get a major standing considering their popularity in India, which is fast emerging as a hub for small cars.
Volkswagen entered the Indian scene this November with Passat and it may produce close to 240,000 vehicles in India by 2012. The company may build a small car based on the Up! that was displayed at Frankfurt Motor Show. Rumours suggest that the rear-engined, rear wheel drive small car may be priced at just $7,500 in India. This will require localization and cost management of the program, to this end, VW is talking to Indian companies like Bajaj Auto to help develop the car.
