West Bengal (WB), India’s state in the east, has launched a fleet of battery powered cycyles, mopeds, three-wheelers, and cars. The project was launched by the WB’s Renewable Energy Development Agency in context to the continuous pollution problem.
West Bengal Power Minister Mrinal Banerjee, who on Thursday launched the vehicles, says: M
otor vehicles with conventional internal combustion engines are known to cause over 60 per cent of the ambient pollution in our cities. In many countries, electric vehicles are becoming popular, particularly in the context of the high cost of fuel.
To make the scheme more reachable by all, Rs 5000 subsidies would be given to the Rs 12,000 cycles, the Rs 27,000 mopeds and the Rs 2,40,000 three-wheelers while the Rs 3,15,000 car would be get a Rs 27,000 subsidy.
Banerjee also shares his government’s commitment to finding alternative fuels particularly bio-diesel.
