Ok, now we are certain - ‘SMART ForTwo’ will head to U.S within two years. Daimler Chrysler, in the face of rising gas prices crisis, hopes to make maximum opportunity to make a few more millions. However, it is uncertain whether Americans will warm up to the little two-seater like Europeans do.
Sure, SMART does not guzzle gas, it has a remarkable mileage record of 46.3 miles per gallon in cities and 70.6 on the highway. However, will that figure be able to beat its downside in length? Right now, America’s favorite subcompact, MINI is 3 inches longer and we all know how Americans love big imposing vehicles. Besides, its top speed of 84 miles per hour is something American will not forgive. As if Daimler Chrysler does not know that there are many other fuel-efficient options arriving on American roads, is it really hoping to beat all others with SMART? Seems like Mission Impossible.
On the other hand, Americans are known to be in awe of stars - and Oscar winner Tom Hanks did drive it in the ‘The Da Vinci Code’, and Steve Martin too in ‘The Pink Panther’. Maybe, Daimler is baking on these movies.
